SpaceSniffer is a freeware tool that allows you to have an idea who the files are structured on your disk. It is portable and doesn’t need any installation. After launching it you need to start a scan. Bigger are the elements on the view, bigger are folders and files on your disk. SpaceSniffer gives you more detail on one portions if you click over it.
This free software allows you to understand where are located bigger files and make some free space by deleting old backups. Another great feature is that you are able to exclude file types.
HDDScan is a freeware utility for hard drive diagnostics (RAID arrays, Flash USB and SSD drives are also supported). The program can test storage device for errors (Bad-blocks and bad sectors), show S.M.A.R.T. attributes and change some HDD parameters such as AAM, APM.
Supported storage devices:
- IDE (ATA) and SATA HDD.
- SCSI (SAS) HDD.
- External USB drives and all major USB boxes (see Appendix A).
- FireWire or IEEE 1394 HDD (see Appendix A).
- RAID volumes made of ATA (IDE) / SATA / SCSI HDDs (surface tests only).
- USB Flash (pen drives) – surface tests only.
- SATA / ATA SSD – solid state drives
EASEUS Partition Manager Home Edition is a FREE disk partitioning utility that offers a powerful range of functions such as resizing partitions, formatting partitions, copying partitions, creating new partitions, deleting partitions, hiding partitions, changing drive letters, setting active partitions, and a handful other functions.
For detailed information about your computer I will recommend to use a System Information tool. The first one is called SIW (System Information for Windows) and gathers detailed information about your system properties and settings and displays it in an extremely comprehensible manner. SIW create a report file in CSV,HTML,TXT or XML. This tool can give you detailed information about Software, Hardware, Network and Real-time monitors where everything is divided in this major categories. SIW is in three versions,the first a standalone utility that doesn’t require installation, SIW with installer free and a version with payment.
Installing a new hard disk is not only a great way to extend the life of a computer that is running out of storage space, it’s easy to do.
If you are not un UNIX and running "du" command, you need a software to analyze your hard disk and see which are bigger file on you computer and smaller. I will show you two free tools who make your work easer for this argument.

Disk Scanner is a tiny freeware utility to check the hard drive for read errors. Sometimes, you may notice, that some files on the disk cannot be read. This may happen for several reasons, but the most important one is the hard drive degradation, that may be the first typical sign of the disk failure.
